As part of ongoing efforts to strengthen aviation security and improve the passenger experience, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will introduce a new identity verification option called TSA ConfirmID, beginning February 1, 2026.
West Virginia International Yeager Airport (CRW) is sharing this information to help travelers prepare and avoid delays at the security checkpoint.
What Is TSA ConfirmID?
TSA ConfirmID is a modernized, alternative identity verification process available to travelers who arrive at a TSA checkpoint without an acceptable form of identification, such as a REAL ID or passport.
Starting February 1, 2026, travelers who do not present an acceptable form of ID may choose to use TSA ConfirmID by paying a $45 fee. This service allows TSA officers to attempt to verify a traveler’s identity through additional screening and verification steps.
It’s important to note:
- TSA ConfirmID is optional, but travelers who decline to participate may not be permitted to proceed through the security checkpoint.
- The fee will be collected through Pay.gov and is based on operational, technology, and administrative costs.
- The process typically takes 10–15 minutes, but may take longer depending on circumstances.
What Identification Is Considered Acceptable?
Most travelers already have acceptable identification. According to TSA, more than 94% of passengers currently present an acceptable form of ID at checkpoints.
Acceptable forms of identification include:
-
REAL ID–compliant driver’s licenses or state IDs
-
U.S. passports
-
Mobile Driver’s Licenses and Digital IDs, including options available through Apple and Google (where accepted)
Good news for West Virginia travelers:
West Virginia is among the states that participate in mobile driver’s license (mDL) programs. Travelers with an eligible West Virginia mobile ID stored in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet may use it at TSA checkpoints where digital IDs are accepted.
What Happens If You Don’t Have Acceptable ID?
Travelers without acceptable identification who enter the security checkpoint may be escorted to a separate area to complete the TSA ConfirmID process before returning to the checkpoint for screening.
To help prevent delays or missed flights, TSA recommends travelers who anticipate needing TSA ConfirmID:
-
Arrive at the airport early
-
Complete the process as soon as possible before their scheduled departure
