Terminal
Development Project

The Central West Virginia Regional Airport Authority is undertaking a transformative modernization project at West Virginia International Yeager Airport (CRW) to elevate the passenger experience and position the airport for future growth. The CRW Next Terminal Development Program includes demolishing two outdated concourses, constructing a new state-of-the-art concourse, renovating key areas of the original terminal, and completing critical upgrades to adjacent apron pavement and Taxiways A and B to improve operational efficiency.

Originally built in the 1940s and expanded over time, the existing terminal no longer meets modern standards for safety, efficiency, or passenger comfort, including an undersized security screening area. By reusing and upgrading the existing terminal structure rather than building entirely new facilities, CRW is taking a more sustainable approach that reduces material waste, maximizes prior public investment, and delivers long-term value. These improvements will streamline operations, enhance passenger flow, and ensure the airport remains a vital gateway for the region for decades to come.

TERMINAL AMENITIES

60,000+ sq ft. of new floor space
New central passenger screening area
New meter/greeter space
Modifications to circulation areas & vertical circulation
Improvements to the terminal lobby
Improved restaurant and concession space
New, central post-security restroom & family restrooms
New passenger holdrooms

Pre-Security Terminal Renovations

This project is made possible through funding from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Airport Terminals Program (ATP) Grant.

Planning and design efforts are focused on modernizing and enhancing Pre-Security public areas of the terminal.

Upgrades include the replacement of existing ticket counters, installation of digital displays above the counters, new flooring throughout, and updated finishes and lighting in the main lobby.

Renovations will extend from the Ticket Lobby to the Security Checkpoint, including improvements to the Ramp area near Java Moon Café, Baggage Claim, and all connecting public circulation areas.

AIRFIELD IMPROVEMENTS

5 aircraft gates supporting Aircraft Design Group (ADG) III aircraft
Approximately 30,000 square feet of new apron pavement
1,400-foot portion of Taxiway A, located between Taxiway A1 and A2, would be shifted to the east by approximately 120 feet to accommodate FAA separation standards for a parallel taxiway
New connector Taxiway A2 would be constructed between Taxiway A & Runway 5-23

CONSTRUCTION

Construction is anticipated to last 36 months. Construction and demolition would be conducted in phases to allow efficient construction while minimizing operational impacts.

Planning and Environmental review is completed.
Phase 1 – Lobby restroom renovation and 2nd Baggage Belt complete.
Phase 2 – Pre-Security & Curbside Renovations: Renovations to the Ticket Lobby, Baggage Claim, secure exit ramp area, and adjacent public spaces. Planned upgrades include new ticket counters, digital signage, improved lighting, updated finishes, and new flooring throughout the main lobby.
Phase 3 – Post-Security Renovations: Planned upgrades include updated seating and holding spaces, new concession spaces, updated restroom facilities, and a new TSA checkpoint area with additonal queuing space.
Airfield improvements would be ongoing and phased throughout construction to limit operational impacts.

FUNDING & BUDGET

Total project cost is estimated at $65–$75 million.
CRW has secured $28 million in FY27 Congressionally Directed Spending, reflecting strong federal support for the project.
Additional funding sources include FAA Airport Terminal Program (ATP) awards, bond financing, and the Transportation Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act (TIFIA) program.
The project will utilize a Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR) delivery method, with onboarding anticipated in 2026.
