About the Airport

It Starts at Home

West Virginia International Yeager Airport (CRW), located in Charleston, opened its doors on December 1, 1947, as Kanawha Airport. Constructed on Coonskin Ridge, it overcame significant geographical challenges to become a vital aviation hub for the state. In 1985, it was renamed in honor of General Chuck Yeager, a West Virginia native and the first pilot to break the sound barrier.

Over the decades, the airport has undergone numerous expansions and modernization efforts. The 1990s and 2000s saw significant upgrades to the terminal and navigation systems, enhancing safety, efficiency, and passenger comfort. In 2022, the airport achieved international status, officially becoming West Virginia International Yeager Airport.

Today, the airport features a 6,715-foot asphalt runway and a modern terminal equipped with dining options, rental car services, and meeting facilities. It is serviced by major airlines offering flights to key hubs across the United States, making it a crucial transportation center for the region.

Beyond its role in facilitating travel, the airport is a significant economic driver for the Charleston area, supporting numerous jobs and contributing to regional growth. As it continues to plan for future expansions and improvements, West Virginia International Yeager Airport remains committed to serving the needs of its passengers and the local community.
