If you’re planning to travel by air soon, now is the time to double-check your ID. Starting May 7, 2025, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will no longer accept state-issued IDs that are not REAL ID compliant at security checkpoints. This includes all airline passengers 18 years and older, even those enrolled in TSA PreCheck.
That means if your driver’s license or state-issued ID doesn’t have a gold star or another REAL ID marking, you’ll need to bring an alternative form of identification, such as:
- A valid U.S. passport
- A military ID
- A CBP Global Entry card
Not sure if your ID is REAL ID compliant? Look for a star in the top right corner of your license. If you don’t see it, your ID may not be compliant.
Why Was REAL ID Created?
The REAL ID Act was passed by Congress in 2005, following the recommendations of the 9/11 Commission, to establish minimum security standards for the issuance of state-issued IDs. The goal is to strengthen identity verification and improve the integrity and security of state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards.
What Happens If I Show Up Without a REAL ID?
If you arrive at the airport with a non-compliant ID and no acceptable alternative, you can expect:
- Delays and additional screening
- Potential denial of access to the security checkpoint
- Missed flights if you’re unable to complete the screening process in time
Don’t let a preventable issue disrupt your travel plans.
How to Get Your REAL ID – Visit the DMV!
To ensure you’re ready, visit your local DMV well in advance of your flight. You’ll need to bring specific documentation to verify your identity, Social Security number, and state residency.
